G.W. Graham Secondary School

studioHuB architects ltd. worked closely with School District 33 on a 19-room addition to G.W. Graham Secondary School, increasing the school’s capacity from approximately 950 to 1,400 students. The project consists of two buildings: a two-storey academic wing and an industrial education and robotics building. The buildings are connected by a covered outdoor learning area, creating a secure central courtyard and strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor learning environments.

The academic wing includes specialty learning spaces on the main level, including kinesiology, music, home economics, and science classrooms, organized around a central social hub that links the bus loop entry to the courtyard. This level also includes a gender-neutral washroom block. The upper floor contains ten general classrooms designed to support flexible teaching models, with breakout spaces integrated into circulation areas to encourage collaboration and informal learning.

The industrial education building includes a construction shop and robotics lab that support hands-on, project-based learning and provide students with opportunities to develop technical and applied skills.

Exterior materials were selected for durability and longevity, including a masonry base with cementitious cladding above. Solar shading strategies were incorporated on the south façade to reduce heat gain, while a continuous canopy provides weather protection along the student bus loading and pick-up area.

The project was delivered on schedule and under budget, allowing the District to reinvest savings into additional school improvements, including building upgrades, interior finishes, and the integration of cooling systems. Through extensive stakeholder engagement and close collaboration with the District and Ministry of Education and Child Care, the design evolved to better support contemporary educational needs while maintaining strict area and budget requirements.
