A 1,600 sq. ft. building, affectionately named “The Cabin” by residents of the Garibaldi Highlands, is home to Sea to Sky Community Services’ preschool and out-of-school care programs. Serving the needs of the Squamish community, the facility provides educational space for 20 preschool children as well as before- and after-school care for 24 children.

studioHuB architects ltd. served as Prime Consultant from design through occupancy. Developed through a partnership between School District 48 and Sea to Sky Community Services, the project included a new early childhood daycare facility, outdoor play and learning areas, and an associated parking lot. Designed and constructed to high building envelope standards, the indoor-outdoor relationship is strengthened through strategically placed thermally broken aluminum curtain wall glazing. A robust wall assembly is clad with locally sourced cedar, while vertical standing-seam metal cladding wraps down to form the gable end walls.

Inside, white birch plywood creates a warm and calming environment for learning and play. Chalkboard-painted walls encourage creativity, allowing children to draw and express themselves throughout the day. The facility incorporates 21st Century Learning principles, universal accessibility, and a gender-inclusive design. A sense of playfulness is woven throughout the project, from wayfinding and signage to the interior finishes. Completed in 2018.
