studioHuB architects is currently working on a 10-classroom addition to Semiahmoo Trail Elementary School in South Surrey. This addition will provide much needed space for an additional 250 students, and will allow the school to remove the portables that are currently on site.

Even though the school has a relatively large site, due to environmental constraints, the opportunities for expansion are limited. The preferred option is a two storey expansion that has embraced the concept of learning pods around a common area. The heart of the expansion is a two storey volume with a large learning stair, and areas for socializing, reading, and play. The lower level rooms all have doors to the shared common space as well as the outdoors, and each room has an in-classroom sink. The addition is connected to the main school by means of a corridor, and includes an elevator in addition to the stairs.

Due to its location close to the road, the addition will be able to provide a new and modern face to this facility, while maximizing the open play space around. The project is currently in the design stage, and expected to start construction in 2023, with an anticipated opening in early 2025.
