Recognition: Modular Building Award of Distinction 2019

Modular Classrooms

In collaboration with the school district and a modular builder, studioHuB architects were the Prime Consultant on an award-winning innovative design solution, for a classroom where the municipal design guidelines, aesthetic requirements, building code, envelope and environmental constraints, demanded an enhanced portable. The design responds to the natural environment of the Whistler mountain backdrop, with a focus on wood, both on the exterior and interiors. Floor to ceiling windows increase daylight and views, and interior finishes are both durable and playful.

At 1,125 SF each, the modular building houses washroom spaces, a mechanical room, classroom, and custom millwork cubbies and storage. The design responds to the climatic conditions with higher insulation values, a sloped roof for enhanced drainage, and durable cladding to match its environment. The focus of the project is to develop an economical solution to an immediate need of providing classroom space on a school site.

The team is developing a kit of parts which is modular, cost effective and yet supports modern learning initiatives. Variations of this classroom are currently under design for two locations, and are expected to be in place for the 2019 school year. Completed 2018.
