UBC MacMillan Theatre Renovation (Room 166)

The Faculty of Land and Food Systems (formerly faculty of Agriculture) is one of the three founding faculties at the University of British Columbia. studioHub architects was engaged by UBC for a renovation of the largest Lecture Theatre at the faculty.

Taking cues from the natural environment and the faculty colours, the design revitalizes the space in both teaching opportunities and appearance by changing a traditional lecture room into a dynamic space with three tiers with flexible furniture. This new layout allows a more traditional classroom set up, as well as a set up for group work at tables of 4 and 6 students.

Vertical half-round wood battens and a new ceiling plane make the space appear taller, and the walls are clad in painted MDF for durability, with writable backpainted glass surfaces at table levels.

A phase of envelope remediation precedes the renovation work, as the existing space had quite extensive leaks. The remediation work is taking place in early 2022, with the interior renovation to follow in the summer. The new space is expected to open for students by the end of 2022.
